Being The Best We Can Be

Oak - Yr 5 & 6

D.T

We have been incredibly busy making bird houses for our D.T learning this half term. We spent time looking at different types of bird houses and which birds prefer the different styles.

We have used lots of skills, including sawing, drilling, hammering and designing to each create a unique bird house. We are very proud of what we have achieved. Have a look below at the process and the finished products.

Remembrance Service 10th November 2023

We were incredibly proud of Skylarks for their delivery of our Remembrance Service. They produced a moving assembly, where they showcased some of their fantastic poetry. You will find the PowerPoint from the service below and a further collection of poems.

We are incredibly proud of our Year 6s for their hard work and resilience during this week and the weeks leading up to it. They took everything in their stride and tried their best.

They have enjoyed breakfast club this week and they finished the week off with some yummy cakes!

Well done Year 6! Woo!

This week, we are currently on our final designs and making dream catchers.

We have worked hard at practicing our skills. Here are some:

In Science this term, we have been looking at light and how we see. We have enjoyed exploring this through scientific experiments and investigations.

We made models of how we see objects.

7/6/22 -Maths

Today, in Maths, Miss Snelling had used tape to mark our tables so that we could practice our protractor skills. We used two different types of protractor to measure a variety of angles and labelled them (on the tables!) acute, right-angle, obtuse or reflex.

The comment, " It feels so wrong to write on the tables." circulated the room.

What a fun-filled fortnight!

SATs Week 2022

We are now finished with our SATs papers and we wanted to take this opportunity to express how extremely proud of the Year 6s we are. They have shown great maturity and resilience throughout the week and they have worked extremely hard throughout their preparations. In addition to completing these assessments, we have enjoyed a week of yummy breakfast, making mathematical board games, baking hedgehog bread and eating cake!

Well done to our Year 6s!

English- Session 6 V2

Monday 1st March 2021

Good morning!

I cannot believe we are in March now - where is the time going! This is our last week of remote learning and then we will all be back in the classroom together! Woo!smiley

Remember, this week we have World Book Day on Thursday so we will be having special learning that day. Also, on Friday I let those who normally have their comprehension on Tuesday know that theirs will be this afternoon instead. I have sent the link to your parents but please remind them. Monday and Wednesday groups are as normal.

For English today, you have a longer video than normal so please give yourself a break as it isn't easy to stare at a screen for long amounts of time.

I hope you have a wonderful day and fingers crossed the sun will come back out.

You're doing amazingly!

Balanced argument session 4

Thursday 25th February 2021

Good morning!

I hope you had some time out in the sunshine yesterday. When I arrived back home from school, I went straight out on a walk to try and get the last bits of sunshine.

Today in our zoom call, we are going to talk through your for and against points about whether Hauxton Primary School children should go to school on Saturdays. We will gather our ideas together. Also, in the zoom call, I am going to ask you to vote on what you would like to write the balanced argument about. This way, if there is anything that you as a collective group feel more passionate about, we can base our final balanced argument on that. Have a think, the options are:

Should children be allowed to have chocolate for breakfast?

Should zoos be banned?

Should children be allowed their phones at school?

Should children come to school on a Saturday?

I look forward to seeing you at 9!

Tuesday 23rd February 2021

Good morning!

What a fabulous start you have made to this half term and it was great to hear that you will be able to come back to school soon (YAY!).

Today's morning activity is arithmetic. In our call tomorrow, we will mark the answers to see how you have done so please make sure you come with those ready. Also, today in English, we will be looking at the features of a balanced argument and in art, we will be creating a background for our own Henri Rousseau inspired masterpiece.

You will notice that there are MyMaths tasks and some Spag.com tasks for you if you finish your work early. They are there to help you feel more confident with the learning we have done.

Keep being fabulous!

Monday 22nd February 2021

Welcome back!

I hope you all had a fun-filled and restful half term break. I spent my time going for lots of walks (like most people); reading a new book, which I finished in 3 days as I couldn't put it down and planting lots of seeds, ready for the garden. Although I miss being able to see people, it was nice to have a bit of time to relax. I am looking forward to hearing all about what you have been up to.

Hopefully today, we will have an idea of when we will all be back together in the classroom. For now, keep being the amazing Skylarks you were before half term.

See you at 9!

Can you believe we are on the last day of the half term?! You definitely deserve the break as you have worked so hard and continued to amaze me every day; you are awesome!

I hope you enjoy your last day of learning and I look forward to zooming with you at 9!

Thursday 11th February 2021

Good morning Skylarks!

I hope you are all well on this Thursday morning. Only 2 more days of learning before you can have a break but I wanted to thank you for all your fantastic work so far. You always amaze me!

This week, I have really enjoyed looking at your wonderful work; having our zoom calls in the morning, where lots of you share ideas and skills and I have enjoyed the comprehension discussions that have taken place.

Today, we are moving on to looking at the area of shapes in Maths and for English, you are writing your own Newspaper reports.

2 little special guests make an appearance in your learning today both vocally and in picture form. When I was at home doing our zoom calls, they were constantly wanting to come in and take over the screen.

I hope you have a fabulous day and I will see you at 9.

Tuesday 9th February 2021

Good morning!

Thank you for a fabulous start to the week. I really enjoyed looking at your learning yesterday and finding out about your Space projects.

For our morning activity today, we are going to look at a safer internet use video as it is safer internet day! It is really important, especially as we are using the internet and devices more, to pay close attention to the messages of this video.

I look forward to seeing you at 9am!

Monday 8th February 2021

Good morning Skylarks,

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and I look forward to hearing what you have been up to on our zoom call. We are now on our last week of remote learning before half term (a well-deserved break) so let's keep up the fabulous work.

This week, we are looking at area and perimeter in Maths and in English, we are on the final stages of our newspaper reports.

I will see you at 9,

Miss Snelling smiley

Friday 5th February 2021

Good morning Skylarks,

Wow, I cannot believe it is Friday again. Once again, you have amazed me this week with your fantastic learning and I wanted to say a big thank you for all your hard work. You are awesome!

In the Maths session today, we are learning about the mean average. We will go through this on our zoom call but here is a picture to help you when completing your learning.

Today, as part of your PSHCE learning, you have an optional experiment, which investigates the impact of different liquids on our teeth. This is optional so you do not have to do the experiment if you do not have the resources. When you look at it, you may think, 'What do eggs have to do with teeth?'. Well, eggshells have a similar chemical composition to our tooth enamel. This means that the impact of liquids on an egg shell is similar to the impact they have on our teeth.

Have a fabulous Friday and I will see you later!

Miss Snelling smiley

Thursday 4th February 2020

Good morning Skylarks,

Thank you for your fabulous work this week. I am sorry I haven't managed to respond to everyone's work from yesterday yet as I was in back to back work meetings after school until very late so I will ensure I respond today.

You will find a recipe for making tortillas in the documents section- this is an optional task if you have the ingredients.

I look forward to seeing you at 9.

Wednesday 3rd February 2021

Hello!

It is Wednesday and we are half way through the week. I hope you were able to get out in the sunshine yesterday as the weather was so mild.

Today, I may be delayed in responding to your work as I have First Aid training straight after school and then I have a Governors meeting, but I will try and respond when I can.

Have a fab day and I will see you at 9.

Monday 1st February 2021

Good morning!

I hope you all had a great weekend. This week we will be continuing our newspaper reports and looking at statistics (timetables, line graphs and pie charts). This afternoon, I have some practical Science for you to have a go at but please do not worry if you don't have the equipment. If you need some card, you can come and collect some from school.

Also this week, I am going to be zoom calling you in groups to hear you read and to work on comprehension skills. When you have your call, you will need your CGP comprehension book ready.

I know this week will be another week of amazing learning from you!

Take care,

I can't believe it is Friday again! You have been working your socks off for 4 weeks now and I couldn't be prouder of the effort you are putting in. You are incredible!

Thursday 28th January 2021

Good morning!

I hope your week is going well. I have been so amazed by all your work this week and I truly am so proud of you.

This afternoon, one of your tasks is to learn how to draw a lion. The video is fairly long and you will need to pause it to do the different steps so you may wish to do part of it and then take a break. I can't wait to see how fantastic they look as you are such an arty bunch.

I will see you at 9.

Take care,

P.S. The snowman is still standing (well, a  ball of snow, that once was a body, and one arm - poor snowman).

Good morning Skylarks,

Thank you for your fabulous work yesterday. Please have your Ancient Mayan God ready to show if you would like to share it on our Zoom call - I was really impressed with them!

I will see you at 9,

Miss Snelling

Tuesday 26th January 2021

Good morning,

I hope you continued to enjoy the snow yesterday. My snowman was still standing by the evening with just a few bits missing (update picture below). Today, for your morning activity, I have asked you to check out the Oak Academy library as each week they are featuring a different author and giving you access to a whole book for free. You can either read it on the screen or you can listen to the audio book. I have asked you to give the book a go as sometimes certain books aren't necessarily what we may choose but they end up being a book we love.

See you at 9am from the classroom (yay!),

Miss Snelling

He is still going!

Monday 25th January 2021

Good morning Skylarks,

I hope you have all had a good weekend. I had snow where I live (not loads but it was nice). I look forward to hearing about what you have been up to this weekend.

This week, we are focusing on multiplying and dividing fractions and in English, we are beginning to write our newspaper reports.

I know this week will be another fabulous week of learning. You're doing an incredible job so keep being the best you can be!

Good morning Skylarks!

Thank you for all your fabulous learning yesterday. You have made a great start to your remote learning and I know you will continue to shine.

Today, we will have a class zoom call at 9am. In this call, I will say hello; take the register; talk about yesterday's learning; explain today's learning to you and hopefully, if we have enough time, start our new class book. It would be great if you could bring the masks you made yesterday to the zoom call so that you can show everyone your fantastic design.

Here is the link for the zoom call:  https://zoom.us/j/93170659394?pwd=YVBVTUtqOWRRSXBkVHpzb3JBVHpMUT09

Please ensure the zoom name is either your name or your parent's name as I will only admit those in the waiting room whose names I recognise.

I am looking forward to seeing you on the call. smiley

Take care,

Miss Snelling

Remote Learning 5.1.21

Good morning Skylarks!

Happy New Year and I hope you all had a wonderful break. It is such a shame that we cannot be back together to start 2021 but hopefully it will not be long until we are all back together in the classroom again.

Mrs Stevens has emailed your parents to let them know that we will be communicating our plans for remote learning shortly.

In the meantime, you will find today's remote learning tasks below. Please complete the tasks and ask your parent/guardian to send a picture of your learning to: Skylarkshomework@hauxton.cambs.sch.uk.

I look forward to seeing your learning and hope that you have a wonderful day.

Take care,

Miss Snelling smiley

Missing Angles Hunt

In Maths, we have started a geometry topic focusing on quadrilaterals, properties of shapes and angles. After identifying different quadrilaterals and their properties, we investigated the internal angles of a variety of quadrilaterals. We braved the cold today to have a go at a missing angles in quadrilaterals hunt. Here are some pictures of us trying to figure out the size of the missing angles.

Remembrance Service

This morning, Skylark Class delivered a Remembrance Assembly to the whole school via Zoom. They did a remarkable job and we couldn't be prouder of the way they maturely addressed the school about the significance of Remembrance Day, using projected and clear voices.

Below is the PowerPoint that shows the order of service. Later this week, I will post more poems from the children.

Super Science

This half term, Skylarks have conducted many experiments to investigate properties of materials. We have looked at: absorbancy, temperature, reversible and irreversible change, ways to separate materials and conductivity.

One of the experiments we enjoyed investigating was irreversible change. An irreversible change is when we cannot bring the material back to its original state. We saw how mixing bicarbonate of soda and vinegar causes an irreversible change, due to gas being released from the solution. To prove that gas is released when mixing these two materials, we placed a rubber glove onto the container to trap the gas and as a result, this is what happened:

Another experiment that we carried out was to test conductivity of materials (whether electricity can pass through them). For this, we had to build circuits and test each material to see if the bulb would light. If the bulb lit up, the material was a conductor. If the bulb did not light up, the material was an insulator.

Welcome Back!

What a fabulous start to the term it has been! We are all settled back and although school is a little bit different to normal, we have adjusted well, ensuring our community is safe and happy.

This term our topic is World War 1 and World War 2. We have already started to look at why the war started; when it started and what life was like in the trenches -we have decided it was not very pleasant! In Science, we are studying properties of materials, which has allowed us to carry out a variety of exciting experiments. Watch this space for some pictures of us conducting them.

Last week, a letter was sent out to outline the new homework system. Here are a few highlights:

Spellings - Spellings should be practiced, using the activities in the purple book, 3 times a week. The weekly spelling test will take place on Fridays. Spelling books will not be marked but results for the spelling tests will be put into reading records on Monday and if your child has got 10/10 2 weeks in a row, an email will be sent with the new spelling list.

Timestables- It is expected that the children practice throughout the week. On Mondays, the children will have their timestable test and when they have achieved 10/10 2 weeks in a row, they will move on. The results will be given in their reading records on Mondays.

Reading - Children should be reading every day! They are expected to record a minimum of 3 times a week in their reading record so that we can see the wonderful texts they are reading. Reading records are due in on Fridays and will be returned home on Mondays.

P.E Days:

P.E will be on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please ensure your child can take out their earrings or that they have tape to cover them.

We look forward to a fabulous year!

Monday 20th July 2020

Dear Skylarks!

It was incredible to see you (Year 5s) on Friday! Mrs Bradley and I couldn't stop laughing to the point that Mrs Parks-Connolly said, "It sounded like you were having too much fun!" We have missed all of you who haven't been in school so much! Year 6s, who aren't in school, I am looking forward to seeing you tomorrow for your leavers' assembly. Mrs Bradley and I will be delivering certificates and the collage photo to you after it so that we can say goodbye and wish you well on your new adventure. Remember, if you would like to bring in a t-shirt for signing, you're more than welcome to.

I cannot believe we are on the last day of the year, a very peculiar year but I couldn't be prouder of you all for your dedication to your learning and how you have matured - You really are amazing!  Thank you for your hard work and positivity during an unusual time.  Also, please give your parents the biggest hug as they have helped and supported you whilst juggling other commitments.

For our learning today, there is a virtual sports day activity, where I need you to send your points to me so that they can be collected for your house. I have also included an about me page template for you to fill in; you're welcome to create your own design.

For a bit of fun, I have attached a Taskmaster Powerpoint (the game I showed you on Friday over zoom) They are just silly activities that you can send pictures of but I reckon you'll be awesome at them. You could even have a go as a family.

It saddens me that we can't spend this last day together but I can't wait to see you all in September. I hope you and your families have a wonderful summer break and I will see you back in school on the 7th September. smiley

Happy Holidays!

Friday 17th July 2020

Hi Skylarks!

You guys are amazing! You are still going and the quality of learning I am receiving is incredible. Year 5s, you are definitely ready for Year 6. Thank you so much for all your hard work during such a strange time. Monday is the last day of school, where we will be having a virtual sports day to collect points for our houses and I am setting a transition activity.

I cannot wait to see you this afternoon on our transition zoom, where we can catch up; I am going to talk to you about how the classroom is changing a bit over the summer holidays and we will play a game.

Have a wonderful day and I will see you later! smiley

Monday 13th July 2020

Hi Skylarks,

I hope you have all had a fabulous weekend in the sunshine. I cannot believe we are in the final full week! I am disappointed that we cannot all be together these last few days but I am looking forward to seeing you on Friday over Zoom! This week, you have a collection of problem solving and puzzles for Maths, and for English, we will be looking at a book called, The Paradise Garden.

I cannot wait to see all your wonderful learning this week as I know it will be incredible. Keep going, you're amazing!

Look after yourselves and I will speak to you soon,

Miss Snelling smiley

Friday 10.7.20

Good morning!

I am so sorry that you haven't heard from me ion here in a little while. I was going to write on here earlier this week but our internet in school was down! I have taken extra precautions and written this whilst at home before leaving to go to school.

I hope you are all well and having a wonderful week. You have blown me away with your hard work this week, especially as the English has many parts to it. I have enjoyed reading your joke books; seeing your droid creations; reading your Alcatraz escape stories and looking at your crossword skills. You are a fabulous lot! Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to learning, especially as we are nearing the end of term.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend; apparently it will be sunny! (yay)

Take care,

Miss Snelling smiley

Monday 6th July 2020

Good morning Skylarks!

It is Monday and I hope you have all had a wonderful weekend. I spent the weekend outside even though it was quite windy! This week, I have uploaded everything as just PDFs but please let me know if that is a problem. Our English this week is taken from Hamilton Trust and I have uploaded the whole PDF, where you will find the instructions on the first page. It is important to read the first page carefully to understand what to do with the resources. Please remember, if you would like anything printed off but cannot do this at home, I can print it at school for you.

Afternoon extras!

As promised, I have found some other websites with great activities:

https://www.lovemyscience.com/experiments.html - this one has lots of science experiments.

https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/home-is-good/ - Has an array of activities from crafting to geography knowledge to educational games.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize - You'll find some Bitesize sessions with Sir David Attenborough!

I can't believe there is only 2 and a bit weeks left of the academic year but my goodness has it been eventful. You are nearly there so please keep up the wonderful work as it won't be long until Year 5s, you'll be Year 6s and Year 6s you'll be Year 7s!

As always, you are fantastic!

I can't wait to hear from you this week :)

Miss Snelling smiley

Friday 3.7.20

Good morning!

It is Friday and another week has passed (really quickly!) Thank you for such a fabulous week of learning and I am so impressed that you are still being the best you can be! For Monday, I will upload some additional activities onto the website as I know that some of you have completed most of them and some of them are not the easiest to navigate around, so watch this space.

Please, please, please make sure you are still reading. I also have a favour to ask: I am looking to add to the recommended reads for each year group. If you have any books that you think should feature on there, please let me know and tell me which age you would recommend it to as I am sure I have forgotten some stunners! I look forward to hearing your suggestions.

I hope you all have an incredible weekend.

Take care,

Miss Snellingsmiley

P.S Please don't worry if you find the maths tricky - it is definitely a challenge! You could google shapes and give yourself prompts for the roman numerals questions.

Thursday 2.7.20

Good Morning!

I hope you are all well and having a wonderful week. You have been working extremely hard and I have really enjoyed reading your biographies and looking at your Maths learning. Today, we are going to be looking at the Black Lives Matter movement for English. I know that many of you looked at the Newsround report I posted on here a little while back but I hope that these tasks will help you to understand what is going on in our world at the moment. If you are worried, unsure or concerned about anything, please speak to an adult.

I look forward to seeing your learning today and I can't say it enough, YOU ARE AWESOME!

Take care,

Miss Snellingsmiley

Update for Year 5 Maths:

Sorry, I have put some incorrect answers on the mark sheet for maths (I could claim I did it on purpose to see who is paying attention but I will be honest about it).

Number 1: the answer should be 19

Number 10: the answer should be 134

Miss Snelling should make sure she has double checked the answer sheet! smiley Thank you to those who spotted these and well done for double checking! (unlike Miss Snelling...)

Miss Snelling

Tuesday 30.6.20

Hi Skylarks,

Thank you for a great start to the week. Lots of you are exploring and sharing your afternoon tasks, including some of the activities you have been doing in the good weather. It is great to see all areas of your learning. Please take a look at My Maths, Spag.com and Spelling Shed as you may have some assignments that need completing. Remember, if you are confident with your spellings, you can get an adult to move you on to the next spelling list and the same with your timestables. You're fabulous learners!

I hope you have a wonderful day!

Monday 28th June

Good morning Skylarks!

I hope you all have had a wonderful weekend and it has been packed with fun! I can't believe this week we move into July and I am so proud of how you are still going and trying your hardest - you are incredible!

This week, we are going to continue our biographies in English and then move on to looking at some Black Lives Matter resources later on in the week. Maths, for Year 5 this week, includes negative numbers, money and problem solving whilst Year 6, you are looking at percentages, money and problem solving. I think the heat was getting to me last week when I was creating your work as I began to label the resources for Wednesday as the 31st June. (Silly Miss Snelling- 30 days has September, April, June and November!)

Wishing you a super week and keep being your fabulous selves!

Friday 26.6.20

Happy Friday Skylarks!

What a wonderful week of learning it has been. As always, you are doing a remarkable job with your work and I am so proud of you. Also, I am really impressed with how you have managed to stay focused in the heat.

Yesterday, at the end of English, we collected some adverbials and sentence starters we could use in our biography writing. Here is a picture so that you can use some of the ideas we came up with as a group.

Have a fabulous day and I hope you all have an awesome weekend.

Thursday 25.6.20

Hello!

My goodness it is hot! Yesterday, the classroom was a bit stuffy even with all the windows and doors open. Today is set to be another scorcher.

If you haven't already, as part of your afternoon tasks, have a look at the Newsround page link about Pride: https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/52872693. June is Pride month, where we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community all over the world. There are some extra links, where you can find out more information, at the bottom of the page under the heading 'More Like This'.

Have a wonderful day today!

Wednesday 24.6.20

Hello!

I can't believe it is Wednesday already. I hope you are all having a good week and are looking after yourselves. This week, we have looked at influential people who stood up for what they believed was the right thing to do. Yesterday, I was amazed by your thoughtfulness and compassion towards Malala Yousafzai. There are many influential people throughout history, influential people taking a stand now and there are those close to us who influence us in our daily lives. Have you realised that you will have had an influence on someone else? I thought I would leave you with that thought. Can you think of who you may have been a role model to? or any actions you have done where you may have influenced people?

I wish you all a wonderful day. I am missing you all.

Tuesday 23.6.20

I wish you all a wonderful week and cannot wait to hear from you.

I am sorry I have realised I forgot to upload our class story and have also forgotten my cable to upload it today (silly Miss Snelling) so tomorrow, I will ensure you have some chapters to listen to. We are loving the book in school and we are having a lot of laugh out loud (lol) moments.

I am enjoying seeing all the afternoon work you are producing. Remember, each afternoon you should be either completing 1 longer task (that takes a while) or 2 shorter tasks.

Enjoy the sunshine and have a fabulous day!

I can't believe it is Friday again. What a fabulous week of learning. Thank you for all your hard work and creativity this week; you are doing a remarkable job!

Black Lives Matter

This week, in the classroom, we have looked at the Black Lives Matter movement and discussed what is going on in our world at the moment. Here is a link to a special Newsround report on George Floyd, US protests and racism: https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/52813673   I recommend watching the bulletin, reading the page and having a conversation with your parents about it.

Book Token Competition

One of your afternoon tasks is to design a book token for the National Book Tokens. Just  to let you know that the closing date for entries is the 28th June. If you use the template https://www.nationalbooktokens.com/uploaded_files/shared/Schools/PGC%20Competition/Create_EntryForm.pdf and then send it to me at school, I will send them all off to the competition.

Good morning Skylarks!

You are doing so well at getting back into the swing of your learning. Some of our Year 6's returned to school yesterday and they all did well with the new routines and kept themselves safe. I am so impressed that you are still working hard at home and can't thank you enough for your wonderful work. smiley

We are starting a new class read (a book I adore), Who Let The Gods Out by Maz Evans. Here is the cover for you to have a look at. If you like the Percy Jackson series, then you will love this book. It is super funny (those in school were laughing out loud) and is filled with Greek Mythology. I recommend that you give it a listen!

Good morning!

It was so lovely to hear from you again yesterday and what a fantastic start to the half term you have made. smiley As it is Tuesday, I would like you to take part in a P.E option today (make sure you stay well-hydrated and keep safe in the sun if you are choosing to exercise outside).

Good morning Skylarks,

I can't believe we are at the last day before half term. I have been so impressed with your learning this half term and I am so proud of you for still putting in the effort. Thank you for your hard work and thank you grown-ups for all your support.

Today, we have the last chapters of The Thousand Year Old Boy by Ross Welford - I will start a new book and continue to upload chapters. If you have any amazing recommendations or books you have heard are great and would like to hear, let me know.

Hello Skylarks,

Hope you are all well and staying positive. I realise I haven't uploaded your fabulous pictures yet but I will make sure I do today. I really enjoyed reading all about your superheroes and you are definitely a bunch of talented artists.

I understand that some of you may have completed the majority of the afternoon menu so if you are looking for some new tasks, here are some websites with activities or home learning sessions:

http://www.sciencefun.org/kidszone/experiments/ Science experiments to do at home

Good morning!

Thank you for all your learning yesterday and your wonderful artwork for the Spread some Joy Campaign. I will put your creations up on here this afternoon. I can see lots of people are practicing their spellings on Spelling Shed and I will be giving rewards for individuals, who I can see have put the extra effort in to practicing.

This afternoon, I have put a link to a computing session on the Bitesize website based around debugging code. I would like you to watch the videos and have a go at some of the activities.

Good morning Skylarks,

I hope you are all well. Please find today's work below. Year 6 you have challenging Maths today like yesterday. The problems take a lot of thinking and the video is there to support you so if your are really stuck, pause the video in stages and do the steps with the video. This afternoon, I have asked you to create a piece of art, poetry or a letter to send to care homes for the elderly. Due to them being a vulnerable group, many haven't been able to leave their care home or see loved ones for a long time now and you can imagine that this must be hard time for them. Your creations will be sent to bring a smile to their faces. There is an email address for your parents to send your creations too but I would love to see them as well.

I will add more chapter of The 1000 Year Old Boy during the day.

Have a lovely day!

Monday 11.5.20

Good morning Skylarks,

I hope you had a wonderful bank holiday weekend and enjoyed the V.E Day celebrations.

This week is a particularly strange week as Year 6s you would have been sitting your SATs. Although I am thankful that the government has seen that during this time assessments are not a priority, there is a part of me that does feel sad you didn't get to show off how brilliant you are as learners. I know that you have worked very hard and would have approached the assessments with a positive attitude and confidence, knowing you are doing your best. So although you may not be participating in your SATs, I wanted you to know that we are extremely proud of you for the effort you have put in to prepare not only for your SATs, but to get yourselves ready for secondary school; you are fabulous learners!  (Year 5s you are too!)

Remember if you need a new book, you can collect them from school - I will be there this week.

Wishing you all a wonderful week and I look forward to receiving all your fabulous work.

Good morning Skylarks,

Thank you for your fabulous learning yesterday- it was really nice to see your views on 'I am a Writer' by Joseph Coelho.

Spelling Shed Leader board

Last week, I rewarded points on Spelling Shed. I rewarded individuals, who I had noticed working hard at their spellings, and extra points for the team who topped the  leader board. The winners of last week were..... (imagine little drum roll) GROUP 2!

I wonder which team will be at the top of the leader board by the end of this week. Can group 2 be knocked off the top spot? or Will they remain the champions? More rewards awarded at the end of the week.

Virtual School Trip (Can count as an afternoon task)

In addition to this, last week, I signed us up to have access to a Virtual School Trip all about sound produced by The Cambridge Science Museum. If you would like to participate (which I recommend you do as I thought it was brilliant- lots of experiments and ways to get you involved at home) then you will need to follow the link below and enter the password. You can access this any time this week but we only have this opportunity until Sunday evening, when the link will expire.

MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU!

Monday 4.5.20

Good morning Skylarks,

I hope you have had a wonderful weekend. I can't believe we are entering another week; it feels like a long time since I have seen some of you. Because of this, I have recorded a video just to say Hi. Click here:  https://youtu.be/Gp_AOeaoaHQ

You will find all of your work for the week below. It is a bank holiday on Friday to celebrate 75 years since VE Day, therefore, it is up to you and your family as to whether you continue with your work on that day.

Remember, if you have any questions about any work, please email me for support through a parent's email. I am there to offer any guidance and to look at the wonderful work you have created.  I look forward to another week of fabulous learning.

Stay safe, stay positive and May the Fourth be with you!

Friday 1/5/20

Hello and happy Friday,

I can't believe we are not only at the end of the week but also at the beginning of May! I have really enjoyed looking at all your work this week and once again, I will put up some of your brilliant pieces so that everyone else can see.

Today, for Maths, you will not be doing White Rose but I have uploaded 4 problem puzzles for you to have a go at. They are sometimes trial and error so that means you are not expected to get the answer first time (if you do, it is luck). It is about determination and perseverance. I have included a separate document with the answers. Good luck!

I will be awarding the group, who collectively have practiced their spellings on Spelling Shed the most, extra points today!

Thank you for all your hard work Skylarks. I wish you a wonderful weekend with hopefully some sunshine.

Take care,

Miss Snelling smiley

Good morning!

Another fabulous day of learning yesterday and I really enjoyed looking at the Science experiments that were conducted and reading your letters of complaint about Buckbeak. Today, for the afternoon, I have uploaded another yoga video from my friend, Annica. During this time, yoga is a great way to connect your mind and body.

I hope you all have a th-abulous Thursday! (not sure that one works but I am committing to it)

Take care,

Good morning Skylarks,

I hope you are all well and staying positive even though the weather is cold and wet sad. Thank you for all your brilliant work yesterday; I have really enjoyed looking at your fabulous learning and creations.

Today, for the afternoon, I have put in a website for Fun Science which has a variety of experiments that have minimal items and there are also some engineering challenges if you navigate through the pages. Have a little look through, ask a grown-up and please don't pester if you do not have the items at home.

This morning, I have awarded more Spelling Shed points to those who have been working hard at their Spelling Shed spellings.

Keep up the great work and have a wonderful day.

Good morning Skylarks,

Thank you for your wonderful work yesterday. It was also great to see some people are moving on with their spellings and I already have lots of fabulous work I can put up at the end of the week. Thank you for sending in your afternoon activities and pictures- you're such a creative bunch! If you decide to write a poem for the NHS, once we are finished with the afternoon menu, I will collate all the poems and make them into a book to send to Addenbrookes as I know they will enjoy reading them.

This afternoon, I have given you the option of having a go at 3D letters again and maybe trying new letters and words. Then it is P.E!

I have awarded extra Spelling Shed points to the person who yesterday practiced their spellings the most.

Wishing you a totally terrific Tuesday!

Thursday 23.4.20

Good morning Skylarks,

I hope you are enjoying the lovely weather. I was so impressed with your adverts that you created yesterday and I can see Year 5's you are confident with fractions and decimals, and Year 6, you're doing a great job with ratio and proportion.

Today, you will find your tasks below under Thursday 23.4.20 and this afternoon, for P.E, you can either pick from our menu or join my friend, Annica, for a Yoga class. In addition, I have asked you to login and explore YUMU on Charanga - it would be great to get some feedback on how you get on with it.

Wishing you all a wonderful day,

Tuesday 21.4.20

Good morning everyone,

Thank you to those who submitted work yesterday; it was so lovely to hear from you and look at the fantastic work you had created. Please do not worry if you are joining back with us today as I am aware we were scheduled to have a training day yesterday. Please can everyone move on to Tuesday's learning but if you are not sure about something because you didn't access the work from yesterday, please have a look back at Monday's files. They are all below the welcome back message.

I will upload some more chapters from The 1,000 Year Old Boy by Ross Welford during the morning.

Wishing you a terrific Tuesday!

Welcome back!

Dear Skylarks and Parents/Carers,

Welcome back! I hope you all have had a safe Easter break in the glorious sun and haven’t eaten too much chocolatesmiley. I am looking forward to hearing from you with your fantastic work again. As a school, we have made a few changes to how the work is set. I will upload the Maths and English on Monday mornings for the whole week and I will put them in blocks so it is easy to see which resources are for each day.

Maths and English

We are going to be using White Rose Maths (which we use in school) as they have developed easy-to-follow resources for home learning. In the PowerPoints and PDFs, I have included links to their website, where you will find a video to watch. However, if you cannot access the video, I have also included explanations in the pages to help. Your task and the answers are included on the documents so you can see how you have done.  This week, for English our learning will be based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone. This includes answers for any grammar work.

 Afternoon Menu

Instead of always setting two tasks each day, I have uploaded a menu of activities to do with the topics that we would have been exploring in school. You pick either one or two tasks from the grid (depending on how long they take you). Some days I will give directed tasks that I would like you to complete.

In addition, I will be emailing each of your parents a login for Charanga (music lessons) where you can continue our music curriculum.

Remember, if you would like any further support please do not hesitate to contact me and when you have completed your learning, please ask your parents to email: skylarkshomework@hauxton.cambs.sch.uk

Also, if you require a paper copy of the work, please contact me as I can arrange this for you.

I look forward to hearing from you all again and seeing all of your wonderful work. I am missing you all and can't wait for us all to be back in the classroom together again!

EASTER HOLIDAY BINGO!

We have all been blown-away by the amazing work the children have produced the past 2 weeks. We would like to say a big thank you to all the children and parents/carers for working with us to keep our Hauxton Primary School community learning.

For over the Easter holidays, we have created a whole school reading and creativity bingo for the children. This is not compulsory but may help keep the boredom at bay. The idea is that they pick a row or column on the bingo boards and have a go at crossing off each activity. Each activity crosses off that one square and they will have achieved bingo when they make it all the way across, down or up.

We would love for you to continue sending us their bingo activities and we will put up the fantastic creations and book choices on the website.

We hope they enjoy the activities and that all of our Hauxton Primary community have a relaxed, positive Easter break.

We look forward to speaking to you soon.

From everyone at Hauxton Primary School – Happy Easter! J

Wonderful Work! (I wanted to add even more!)

Friday 3rd April 2020

Good morning Skylarks!

I can't believe we are at the end of week 2 and on the last day before the Easter Holidays, where you will take a well-deserved break from the 4 tasks. Over Easter, if you are a bit bored, we have created a reading and creativity bingo board, that you don't have to do but has a selection of activities you could do if you have some spare time on your hands. I will also be continuing to add recordings of The Thousand Year Old Boy by Ross Welford should you wish to keep up with the story over Easter, if not, you can listen to a block of them when you come back after the break. The bingo activities will be added on here this afternoon once normal school time is over.

In addition, I will add some pictures of the fabulous learning you have created this week- so keep an eye out!

Thank you for all your remarkable work these past 2 weeks - you have amazed me!

Look after yourselves, stay positive and enjoy your well-deserved rest.

Welcome to week 2 of remote learning and I hope you all had a great weekend. You will find the 4 tasks below. We are very lucky that my best friend, Louisa - who is an illustrator and graphic designer- has created an art skill video for you to have a go at.

In addition, I wanted to share an awesome book I have read recently, The 1000 Year Old Boy by Ross Welford .

Below is the cover, blurb and a recording of me reading the opening and chapter one. I really enjoyed this book so I hope you do too. You could sit and listen whilst doing something else or get yourself cosy and enjoy a bit of the story each day.

Happy Friday Skylarks!

I hope you all managed to enjoy the glorious sunshine yesterday. It was lovely to hear and see all the acts of kindness you carried out for your families and the community. We are at the end of the first week and you have blown-me-away with your hard work and resilience as I know it  must have felt a little strange and taken some getting used to.

I would like to also thank your parents and carers for all their hard work and please make sure you give them a big hug to say thank you from you! (They have also had to get used to a bit of a strange week.)

Below, are your 4 tasks. For the art challenge, I would love to see your creations and I will put up some of them at the end of the day as I think they will be fabulous!

I hope you have a  wonderful weekend, hopefully away from screens as I am aware these tasks mean you may spend a bit longer on technology than normal.

Take care of yourselves and I look forward to another day of awesome emails coming my way! I miss you all.

P.S. To finish our week off, my poem had to be from one of my favourite poets: Michael Rosen.

Thursday 26th March 2020

Good morning Skylarks!

I hope you are all well. I was so impressed with your sketching skills yesterday! Today, you will find your 4 tasks below. One of the curriculum tasks I would like you to complete is an act of kindness, where you are off the computer screen and doing something to help someone else. I have put a variety of ideas on the PowerPoint but you may have some ideas for yourself. You could either write about it or send photographs. Also, thank you to those who have completed MyMaths, Spag.com, sent through reading logs and spelling books. I have put more Mymaths and Spag.com up today.

Yet again, I couldn't resist...

Today's poem is linked to our Viking topic and is written and performed by Rachel Piercey. In this poem, we find out all about the Norse Gods!

Have a lovely day and don't forget Joe Wicks each morning has a half-an-hour workout for you. You are doing a brilliant job and I am super proud of you!

Good morning Skylarks! I hope you are well. Once again, thank you for the brilliant learning and the effort you are putting in. Below, are your four tasks for today. One of your curriculum tasks is to conduct your own Science experiment or discovery. I have put a few ideas on the slides but obviously if you do not have the equipment in your home already, please do not pester your parents/carers for it as I do not wish for anybody to have to go out to get anything for it.

Information for your parents/carers: Today, at 1pm, the Secret WW2 Bunker in Liverpool are streaming a live history lesson about life during WW2 in Liverpool inside the bunker. It is being streamed on Facebook which is why I'm addressing this to the adults as the children should not have Facebook. I know this isn't our topic right now but Year 6 studied WW2 last year and Year 5 will study WW2 at the beginning of next year. I thought it looked like a cool idea, that is aimed at Primary School children.

Today's Poem-

Here is another poem but this time read by a fantastic poet called Ruth Awolola reading: Mainly about Aliens. This poem makes us think about how we accept others and our own world.

Thank you for all your fantastic learning yesterday; I was really impressed with the quality and the hard work you put in. I am sorry there were a few technical glitches with the videos but hopefully today is easier.

Just because I can, here is a short poem to keep you going:

Aim High to the Sky

by James McDonald

Aim high to the sky,
In all that you do.
Because you just never know,
What it takes to be you.

Be strong and be brave,
But at the same time be kind.
And always be sure,
That you’re using your mind.

Below are your 4 tasks for the day. I look forward to receiving your work.  Remember, Joe Wicks' will be leading a workout at 9am. At school, we all had a go and over 800,000 people took part from around the world, which I think is pretty cool.

Have a great day! Miss Snelling smiley

P.S At the end of the week, I will let you know which group is in first position on the leader board for SpellingShed and over the weekend, I will share the fabulous book reviews I have received.

P.S - I hope you enjoy watching the animals at Edinburgh Zoo.

Remote Learning

Dear  parents and Skylarks,

As we move into remote learning, I will be uploading the work for the day on here. There will be 4 tasks that the children are expected to complete: a Maths task, an English task and two Curriculum tasks. Please send me a picture of completed work to the email address provided on the letter (SkylarksHomework@hauxton.cambs.sch.uk) and please don't hesitate to email me if you need anything clarifying. I will try to put videos and information sheets to help support the tasks. In addition, I will upload some websites that have educational games on them and a few tasks to have a go at during the time but are not part of the 4 main tasks.

Please, please, please Skylarks, read as much as you can!  I would love to hear all about the fabulous books you are reading and if you write a review, I will put it on the website to inspire others.

Please stay safe, stay in touch and I look forward to all of us being together again. I will miss you greatly!

In the first match, we lost 2-0 but we all really tried our best. It wasn't easy because the team were very strong and seemed to know what they were doing more than we did. We were a bit down-hearted and wanted know what we could do to improve.

In the second match, we won 2-0. Oscar and Olivia both scored. We still congratulated the other team at the end. After that, Mrs Cooke gave us a target - everyone to score a goal by the end of the competition - no pressure then!

The third match was hard because the opposing team played quite dangerously. Eirlys got hit in the face with the ball and had to go off for First Aid, which meant we only had one substitute and the other girls had to play the whole match. We lost 2-1.

Eirlys rested again for the fourth match. We played really well as a team and put together some good passes. We had lots of shots on goal but they defended well and it ended 0-0.

Eirlys was determined to get back on for the last match even though she was a bit nervous about being tackled in case the ball bounced up again. We again won 2-0!

After 5 matches, most of the team had scored and we had won two, lost two and drawn one. We wished that there were more matches to play.

Everyone played really well and we had lots of fun. We ended up fourth out of six. We were so pleased not to have come last!

Geometrical Patterns

In art, we have been learning about Geometrical patterns (a repeated pattern of 2D shapes). During the Early Islamic Civillisation, many objects adorned geometrical patterns. Here are a few examples of the amazing prints we created.

Bikeability

This week, Skylark Class have been participating in  Bikeability. They have been working hard on their road safety skills and their cycling proficiency. The trainers and both Miss Snelling and Mrs Bradley have been amazed by their great listening, concentration and their ability to support one another. It was a cold week but they didn't let that stop them and we are so proud of the way they represented Hauxton Primary School to our visitors. Thank you Skylarks!smiley

An Act of Remembrance by Skylark Class

This half term, we have been studying the book Varmints. We have written a variety of texts based on the picture book as our inspiration. Here are some extracts from our narrative writing:

"Lurking  through the crowd of drenched varmints, one of them looked and acted strangely. The crowd of varmints looked like mindless drones with their heads were facing the ground There was no colour in the city just black and miserable.Everyone was slumping around . It was always busy. There was always someone in sight." - Noah

"After the Varmint had gone into the city,he couldn’t stop thinking about the meadow (the bees buzzing, the birds singing and the moles in the dirt) but now he was stuck with this. He hated it! His ears drooped for he had never been so dejected. The other Varmints were just emotionless droids. They were also immense, obese and they had rat tails. Even though the Varmint didn’t like the city, he wandered into a block of flats, hoping he could find one of his own." - Alec

"As he  climbed over  the junk pile - which was on  his rooftop - he overlooked the  city. “Life shouldn't be this way!” he thought. After barging through the junk pile, he scampered to his tap, but out of the corner of his eye, he saw a radiant blob, that was emerged into the tower. Cautiously, he poked it. It wiggled and he walked away in confusion. High up above, on his rooftop, he made his way for the elevator. "- Jenna

"Up on the roof, where the Varmint observed the jars, a blob appeared right in front of him. This StRaNgE, neon- blue ‘THING’ had confused the Varmint greatly. He walked over very nervously and touched the weird little thing without thinking. It moved like any other slime-ball would and it made a noise like any other slime-ball would make. He scanned the horizon but instead of seeing dull blackness, he saw scattered blobs staring back at him as if they were going to explode. For some reason, the Varmint had felt a connection with the sapphire-blue THING. " - Noah

"There was a little, blue, bright blob shining and appearing on the roof, so the varmint stared for a while wondering what it was. The varmint strode over to the … B..L...O...B and poked it. When his finger touched the object, it was like there was  something inside of it- like something poked him back. As he made his way through the garbage, the varmint saw all of these other blobs throwing their roots out. He ran like he never had before not believing his eyes. All of a sudden, the varmint slowed down, becoming weaker and weaker. Coughs and splutters could be heard throughout the city for they had yet to find a cure . " - Imogen

"He trotted back to the roof with his plant. He sat there for hours gazing at the mysterious creatures that came near him and that's when he had hope.Knowing that he could make it ,he sprung into the air and gripped onto the slimy tentacle , but it was too slippery. The varmint flew off, trying to direct himself to the pile of junk. His hand gripped onto the roof and he climbed up and sat there waiting...waiting...waiting until another blob came near. The same thing happened but this time, he was knocked unconscious." - Brandon

"Limbs aching, he  awoke to find he was laying on the floor. All he could see was the faces of the other varmints. He could hear the bees buzzing once more .Was it the meadow? The blobs were gliding away. He didn't know where he was going but it couldn't be worse than the city. Could it? " - Toby

"Was this heaven? He pinched himself. Ow!

This was not heaven. Where was he? This wasn’t a city - this was a meadow. He stumbled on to his feet, greeted his varmint friends and walked over to the edge. This wasn’t just a meadow, this was home. It was his home! He ran smelling all the flowers on the way. But best of all his, plant was there too all healthy and alive. He was definitely home." - Miia

Science

This term, in Science, Skylarks' are learning all about light. We have looked at how we see things and how light refracts. Today, we were investigating the visible spectrum by carrying out three activities to produce rainbows. You will see below some of our discoveries.

We noticed that rainbows were created when using a prism, a mirror in water and when reflecting light off a CD. This proved to us that light is actually made up of the colours of a rainbow and not white. Here is an explanation by Miia: 'Us humans can not see light as what it really is, we can see light as white but really it is the colours of a rainbow merged together. When light travels through a transparent object, it refracts (bends). Each colour has a different wavelength and a different ability to bend. Red has the least ability to bend and the longest wavelength whereas violet has the shortest wavelength but the best ability for bending. This is how we see rainbows on a sunny yet wet day!

Also, we discovered that the way to remember the colours of the rainbow (as the song doesn't help us) is by either remembering:  ROY G BIV or Richard Of York Gained Battle In Vain  (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet)

Finally, to prove that the colours merge together, we created colour spinners, which when they are not spun show all the colours of the rainbow. However, when they are spun, they display white.

Skylarks have settled back in to school routine and hit the ground running with their learning. This term our topic is The Maya Civilisation. In Maths, we are focusing on decimals and percentages and in English, we have been writing balanced arguments.

Please find attached the Homework Menu, Learn by Heart and Topic Overview. Please can you ensure your child is practicing their timestables, including division facts, and their spellings.

We look forward to sharing our fabulous learning!

Hello Hauxton Issue 16- December 2018

Super Science!

This half term we have been investigating materials. We have carried out lots of experiments to discover the properties of materials and how materials can change.

On Monday, we conducted an experiment to show irreversible change. If you would like to have a go at the vinyl glove experiment at home, have a look at our methods!

The Piano Animation

Hilltop Information Powerpoint

I can't believe how quickly the weeks are passing! Skylarks have been working extremely hard and have hit the ground running with their learning. Here is a quick peep:

English

The children have amazed me with their ability to access characters' emotions and write in an emotive way. We have written poetry and letters to our loved ones from the trenches, and created film narrative based on an elderly man's flashbacks of his life. The vocabulary and mature understanding has shone through. We have looked at words like: secluded, desolate, despondent and used lots of figurative language. Next week, I will be uploading pictures, the animation and voice recordings of the children reading their stories, so keep visiting our page!

History and D.T

In History, we have looked at why, where and when WW1 happened and looked at what life was like on the front line. Over the last few weeks, we have gradually made our own WW1 helmets and created instructions for you to be able to create your own! I must say, they look fantastic!

Maths

We have started the year by looking at Place Value and the Four Operations. We are especially focusing on mental strategies to support efficient methods. E.g. Instead of using long multiplication to solve 120 X 20 =, we can figure out 12 X 2 and make it 100 X bigger. It would be great to practise this with your children at home, along with their timestables. Next week, we are delving into division and will practise mental and written methods. The better they know their timestables, the easier division is.

I want to say a big thank you for all the Homework going on at the moment. We have shared a few bits so far and it is great to see the children's creativity, and eat some delicious food along the way!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and please check back next week.

Miss Snelling
